To build an equitable future for all, we must commit to undoing white supremacy for the long haul.
Washington, D.C. –In response to today’s verdict in the charges against Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd, For Our Future Action Fund released the following statement:
“Today, the Minneapolis jury found Derek Chauvin guilty of second-and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges in the brutal, senseless death of George Floyd last year.
“Nevertheless, the conviction does not erase the painful, hard truths of how this country robs Black folks of their breath, of their dreams, and their humanity. A jury’s ruling cannot simply undo systemic racism.
“Since George’s death and the ones that followed, we have stood together across race and place to witness this and other horrific acts of violence at the hands of law enforcement. We stood together to demand reforms from our police, our courts, our elected leaders. We must continue to stand together to keep doing the hard work of anti-racism.
“There should be no closure, nor rest until we take tangible steps to address America’s long history of police violence against Black people. It will take our collective voices coming together to break the chains of inequality and dehumanization in our neighborhood streets, schools, healthcare, economic, and criminal justice systems.
